TAINOS

Are Tainos not Extinct?

The Tainos survived. Many married Europeans; others married the African slaves that were brought to Jamaica.

You can see the existence of all three races in the faces of many modern day Jamaican people.

Why Tainos?

Modern day Jamaica was inherited from the Tainos. It is celebrated daily with reminders in the language, the foods and the coat of arms printed on all monies. Knowing your ancestry gives your culture strength.

Do you have Tainos at the Heritage Camp?

The Camp has a strong collaboration with the United Confederation of Taino People. This has ensured that visitors get an authentic educational experience.

Did the Tainos assist the Maroon uprising?

Our historians say that the Maroons used the caves and mountains to help with their escape and that the Tainos knowledge of Jamaica’s geography would have helped.

Who are the Tainos?

The Taínos are the indigenous peoples of Jamaica and the Caribbean. The word Taino can be translated to mean Noble or Beautiful People.
